In 2011, Gráinne Walsh abandoned a career in the I.T. Industry to try her hand at brewing beer for a living. Having spent her time bouncing from one big-company job to the next but never really settling, she took the plunge and made herself a new home in the beer industry by setting up Metalman Brewing in Waterford city. The brewery now makes over 15 different beers and is the only microbrewery in Ireland to have a canning line on site. It’s not surprising that beer is so popular in a town known for its pubs! And August is a great time to be a beer lover in Halifax because that is when the Seaport Beerfest takes place (August 8th and 9th this year). Beerfest is Atlantic Canada’s largest gathering of local craft beer, imports and cider. I was lucky enough to attend this year’s event on Saturday, where more than 110 different producers and 275 unique products were on offer. Chefs learn how to pair food and wine from their earliest days of culinary school, but matching food with beer is a slightly different skill — and not always on the curriculum.

If you’re prone to saying you don’t like the taste of beer, make sure Nick Pashley doesn’t overhear you.

Thousands of people are expected to hop down to the Cunard Centre this weekend to sample nearly 300 craft beers and ciders at the 8th annual Seaport BeerFest, which Pashley said gurantees everyone will find something they like.

“It’s like saying I don’t like the taste of cheese,” the Toronto-based writer and beer expert said with a smile.

“There’s many, many tastes of cheese, there’s many, many tastes of beer – maybe you just haven’t found the taste you like.”
